ILH Study Tracks

The ILH offers certificates highlighting a particular study profile of selected students. At present, the three proposed study profiles, or study “tracks”, giving rise to an ILH certificate are

  • the “ILH international track”, certifying a study profile with an above-average international component
  • the “ILH PhD track”, proposed to students choosing a strong research component potentially leading up to a PhD degree
  • the “ILH Applied Science Track”, dedicated to students integrating an above-average industrial experience in the frame of their studies

The ILH certificates are bestowed on selected students upon application. The certificates are provided as a supplement to the official Master’s degree certificates of the University of Stuttgart upon successful completion of, both, the study degree and the additional elements of the respective ILH study track.

Certificate of the ILH International Track
Figure 1: Certificate of the ILH International Track.

The ILH International Track certificate (Figure 1) is bestowed on selected students, provided they complete several internationally oriented elements in the course of their studies. The particular elements can be adjusted on an individual basis, but they must represent a significant extra effort beyond the minimum study requirements. Examples of an ILH  International Track profile can be:

  • at least one semester performed in the frame of e.g. an Erasmus programme at one of our department’s partner universities abroad.
  • at least 6 ECTS credits obtained from courses at the University of Stuttgart in English language (for German-native speakers) or in German (for non-German native speakers)
  • at least one of the two research theses (Master’s thesis, research project) written in English language (for German-native speakers) or in German (for non-German native speakers)

The ILH PhD track certificate (Figure 2) is bestowed on selected students, provided they complete several research-oriented elements in the course of their studies. The particular elements can be adjusted on an individual basis, but they must represent a significant extra effort beyond the minimum study requirements. Examples of an ILH PhD Track profile can be:

  • at least 12 ECTS credits from ILH Master’s courses in the area of power or microwave electronics
  • Research and Master’s thesis carried out at ILH on consecutive topics, in view of achieving a…
    • Publication and presentation of the research or Master’s thesis work at a major international scientific conference, sponsored by the ILH

When carrying out the ILH PhD track students earn credits (e.g. from the conference publication) that can be accredited in a potential subsequent PhD position.

The ILH PhD track does not give rise to a guaranteed job offer as research assistant in view of obtaining a PhD degree at ILH. Neither is the ILH PhD track a commitment by the student to continue his or her studies towards a PhD degree.

Certificate of the ILH Applied Science Track
Figure 3: Certificate of the ILH Applied Science Track

The ILH Applied Science Track certificate (Figure 3) is bestowed on selected students, provided they complete several application-oriented elements in the course of their studies. The particular elements can be adjusted on an individual basis, but they must represent a significant extra effort beyond the minimum study requirements. Examples of an ILH Applied Science Track profile can be:

  • at least 2 semesters work (min 20h/month) as a student assistant (HiWi) at ILH
  • work as a tutor to fellow students in one of the institute’s practical training courses (Fachpraktikum, Grundlagenpraktikum, ECPE training etc.)
  • at least one of the two research theses (Master’s thesis, research project) performed at one of our industrial partners in the frame of a collaborative R&D project
